The quick checklist before you price a card

These details move value more than anything else.

Set & card number

The code at the bottom (e.g. "182/165") tells you which set and how rare the number is.

Rarity symbol

Circle = common, diamond = uncommon, star = rare. Star-H, double rare and illustration rare sell for much more.

Holo or reverse holo

Same card, different price. Reverse holo versions often sell for multiples of the non-holo equivalent.

Condition

Whitening, scratches, creases and centering cut value fast. Quoted market price assumes near-mint.

First edition

On older sets, a first edition or shadowless marking can 5× the price of the same card.

English vs Japanese

English and Japanese versions are priced separately in the app — Japanese prints are often cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a way to value a card without typing anything?

Yes — scan with the camera. TCG Companion recognises the card automatically, no typing required.

What if my card is damaged?

Quoted market values assume near-mint. Heavy play or damaged cards are typically 30–70% less depending on condition.

Are first edition cards worth much more?

On older sets (Base through Neo), yes — often several times the unlimited print. Modern sets don't have first edition markings.

Where does the pricing data come from?

Market prices are sourced from PriceCharting. The eBay button opens live listings for the exact card.
